Day 11 and 12- Fort William to Dornoch and Dornoch to John O’ Groats

Day 11 (Sunday)- 102.55 miles, 8 hours and 11 minutes
Day 12 (Monday)- 84.7 miles, 7 hours and 25 minutes

Those last few miles where so tough! I really wanted to get it over and done with but the weather and the hills made it hard! Mixed emotions finishing, but I’m glad not to be camping every night now! Got to see lots of Britain and its people in a really unique way.

Towards the end, I met a lot of other people who where either just finishing or just starting their journeys, some people where even running it! Nutters!

On reflection, if I where to do it again, I’d definitely go lighter and attempt to do it in half the time, mostly because camping is just as expensive as B&B’s.

Thanks to all those who have sponsored me, and for those who haven’t there is still time, it only takes a few minutes and every little helps.

Day 8/9/10- Scotland so far

Day 8- 98.99 miles- 8hrs 41mins, average speed
11.38
South Scotland to Androssa Ferry terminal

Involved going through Dumfries and going on the
A76, was quite difficult at times. Tried to get
to the ferry terminal in time for the half 8
crossing, only to realize that it only ran on a
friday. Camped in a caravan park nearby on the
sneaky.

Day 9- 80.85 miles- 7hrs 36mins, average speed
10.62
Isles of Arran to Oban

Isles of Arran- amazing! Got my new top speed
there as well, 35mph. Ferry crossing was cool and
the islands really scenic. Road to Oban (A816)
was bit dodgy at times; very bendy, windy and
busy. Managed to get to Oban in time to see a
boring game of football by the English and a
hostile bunch of Scottish people booing whenever
England got the ball. Slept in another caravan
park on the sneaky :s.

Day 10
- 59.12 miles- 5hrs 51mins, average speed
10.09
Oban to Fort William

Bit of a bad day, legs felt really bad. Train
doesnt leave until Wednesday, so i figured I
might as well take it slow rather than get there
too early. Saying that, I will aim to do the
remaining 175 miles in two days, to be done by
monday night. Bikes still ok but I can tell its
getting to the point of needing a service,
something its never had. Seeing more JOGLEs on
the way up, I’m so glad I started south, the
scenery and epicness of Scotland has made the
last few days all the more better. Camping in a
field in the middle of no where.

Day 7 (Wednesday)- Kirkstone Pass (Windermere) to Annan (Scotland)

71.05 miles, 6hrs 26mins. average speed 11.02mph

Very early start, the sheep woke me up, but this was good as on the climb up the Kirkstone pass, I saw hundreds of professional cyclists racing down. The Lake District is spectular, so this scenic route was very much worth taking. Link

Went through Penrith to Carslisle, coming to an earlier stop in Annan, near the border of Scotland/ England.

Overall, going well so far, no problems what so ever with my bike yet, not even a puncture. Past half way, so I hope things stay the same. Generally I feel more comfortable and have a good routine set in, so I think I can stay on target and catch the train that I’ve booked next Thursday!!

Tomorrow I finish in the Isles of Arran, this is where the real beauty of Scotland kicks in!

Day 6 (Tuesday)- Manchester to Windermere

108.19 miles, 9hrs 3 mins, average speed 11.94mph.

After charging my batteries and getting clothes washed at my nans in Stretford, Manchester, I set off for the Lake District.

Lancaster was weird, loads of people riding bikes which makes a change for most towns that ive been through so far.

Was a good ride until the end, the few campsites that I could findĀ  were too expensive so I ended up sleeping in a field full of sheep on the start of the Kirkstone Pass.

Day 5 Church Stretton to Manchester

101.29 miles, 8hrs38mins riding, 11.72 average speed. Met Tom Arnold at Shrewsbury, who is training to cycle from Sheffield to Barcelona (link), got lost trying to leave, but were soon on our way to Whitchurch. Headwinds where bad, I thought the wind blew south to north, not today though :( After taking a slight detour in Warrington, I was soon at my Nans in Stretford, a good stop for refueling and recharging batteries!

So close to being half way, which will be when I reach Windermere tomorrow!
